I have never been one to create New Year’s resolutions, mostly because I’ve always been afraid to fail. Year after year I see friends, family, and colleagues break their resolute commitments to be healthier, more active, and implement new practices only to give up on their goals before the sun sets on Valentine’s Day. So, what does this mean for resolutions? How can we head into the New Year with a plan that sets us up for success (that we can actually stick to)?
Like any new adventure, it’s important to lay out a plan and start preparing. Here’s how I’m planning to set goals that I can not only stick to this year, but also knock out of the park.
Step 1: Get Organized
It’s no secret that organization helps you operate more efficiently and ultimately produce better results. Your mind can better focus on the tasks at hand ensuring maximum execution. Use some of the tips below to eliminate clutter and start getting your life in order.
Digital Refresh
- Organize laptop files and folders
- Purge unnecessary photos, emails, and texts
- Sort and group phone apps
Home & Office Refresh
- Make a list of areas in your home that need organized
- Remove surface clutter
- Digitize your hardcopy files and paperwork
Step 2: Create a System
Now that you’ve decluttered, it’s time to keep a clear list and process to attack. Develop a system that works for you. Whether it’s a to-do list app (there are tons of free tools that help with this), a physical planner, or a filing system, having a structure makes it easier to stay organized.
Step 3: Stay strong my friends
If you’re comfortable doing so – let your friends and colleagues in on the plan creating a built-in system of accountability. Then, be sure to manage your own peace by learning to say “no” for tasks or commitments that will stretch you too thin or erode your ability to reach your goals.
By embracing a strategic approach to setting goals and fostering accountability, this New Year's journey becomes an empowering adventure rather than a daunting task. Let's cultivate success by organizing, implementing structured systems, and curating a supportive environment to triumphantly achieve our aspirations. Cheers to a great year ahead... you’ve got this!
