Recognizing Fair Housing Month

Homeownership remains the single best way to building wealth for American families. It has been more than 50 years since former president Lyndon Johnson signed the Fair Housing Act into law, but there is still a 30-percentage-point gap in homeownership between white and Black Americans, the same gap which existed when the historic law was adopted in April 1968.
While homeownership is lowest among Black Americans, according to U.S. Census Bureau figures, there are also significant gaps in homeownership among Hispanic or Latino Americans, American Indians or Alaska Natives, and Asian or Pacific Islander Americans.
As leaders in their communities, REALTORS® are in a unique position to stand as fair housing advocates, helping to erase discrimination and build a more equitable future for all.
In commemoration of Fair Housing Month, The National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) provides members and REALTOR® associations with inspiring resources and recommendations:
- Fair Housing Month poster/toolkit – Downloadable posters in two sizes and a Fair Housing proclamation pledging a positive approach to fair housing practices are available.
- Special events – Register now for upcoming Fair Housing Events:
- April 25 at 2 p.m. EST – Celebrate the 2023 Fair Housing Champion award winners and hear industry experts address ongoing barriers to homeownership.
- April 26 at 1 p.m. Central – An interactive Zoom event showcasing how REALTORS® nationwide are sharing fair housing knowledge and advancing equitable homeownership opportunities
- Books, films and podcast recommendations – A collection of short fair housing video titles and a feature-length motion picture highlighting how and why we became divided, and how people can work together to correct housing inequities.
- NAR Fair Housing Grants – State and local associations can apply for an NAR Fair Housing Grant in order to offer education and activities furthering the mission of fair housing. Learn more by reading the Fair Housing Grant toolkit at NAR.org.
